3.4 The legal issues that affect media
Health and safety
Media production can involve different environments, equipment and activities — all of which can pose health and safety risks. Media producers must understand these risks and take action to keep themselves and others safe during all phases of production.
Common risks and hazards in media production
Risks and hazards can appear during any stage of production, especially when working with equipment, travelling to locations, or involving other people. Common examples include:
- Trips, slips or falls caused by cables, cluttered areas or uneven ground
- Electric shocks from damaged wires or poorly maintained equipment
- Injuries from lifting heavy items or using equipment incorrectly
- Weather risks such as filming outside in rain, snow or strong sunlight
- Fire risks due to overloaded sockets or hot lights
- People risks such as working with the public, crowds, or unfamiliar locations
How to reduce and manage risks
Media producers must take steps to mitigate (reduce) risks to keep people safe. This can include:
- Keeping cables taped down and walkways clear
- Checking all equipment before use
- Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear
- Planning shoots to avoid unsafe areas or extreme weather
- Following safety instructions for tools, lights and props
- Having first aid or emergency plans in place
What is a risk assessment?
A risk assessment is a document that identifies possible hazards during a media project. It explains how likely the risks are, how serious they could be, and what actions will be taken to reduce or avoid them.
The purpose of a risk assessment is to:
- Keep everyone involved in the production safe
- Identify hazards before they become a problem
- Help with planning and preparation
- Show that the producer is working responsibly
What is a location recce?
A location recce is when a media producer visits a location before filming or photographing there. The goal is to check if the location is suitable, safe, and accessible for the planned activity.
The purpose of a location recce is to:
- Spot potential risks or obstacles in advance
- Check lighting, space, sound and access
- Decide what equipment will be needed
- Confirm if any permissions or restrictions apply
By completing risk assessments and location recces, media producers can reduce health and safety risks, work more efficiently, and protect the wellbeing of everyone involved in the project.
