2.2a Client Requirements
Before starting a media project, it’s important to understand exactly what the client wants. This is known as identifying the client requirements.
What are client requirements?
Client requirements are the instructions, goals and expectations set by the person or organisation who is asking for the media product. These requirements help guide the planning, design and development of the final product.
They usually include:
- Purpose – What the product is meant to do (e.g. inform, entertain, advertise)
- Target audience – Who the product is aimed at (e.g. teenagers, families, professionals)
- Style or tone – What it should look, sound or feel like (e.g. fun, professional, serious)
- Content – What should be included (e.g. images, text, videos, animations)
- Format – The type of product expected (e.g. website, video, poster, animation)
- Timescale – When the project needs to be completed by
- Budget – How much money is available for the project (if stated)
Where do client requirements come from?
You might receive client requirements in different ways, including:
- A brief – a written document describing the project
- Ameeting or conversation – where the client explains what they need
- Aproposal or script – that includes content and creative expectations
